ADHD & Executive Functioning Evaluations

ADHD can affect much more than a child’s ability to pay attention. Difficulties with executive functioning, organization, working memory, impulse control, task initiation, and self-regulation can affect academic performance, relationships, and day-to-day functioning. At the same time, difficulties with attention and executive functioning are not always caused by ADHD. Learning disabilities, anxiety, mood concerns, and other developmental factors can sometimes look similar or occur alongside ADHD.

When ADHD or executive functioning concerns are present, I conduct a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. This allows attention and executive functioning to be evaluated within the broader context of a child or adolescent’s cognitive abilities, learning and memory, academic functioning, and social-emotional development. Looking across these areas is important for understanding not only whether ADHD is present, but also what may be contributing to the difficulties a child is experiencing.

Each neuropsychological evaluation is tailored to the child’s age, developmental history, presenting concerns, and educational needs. The evaluation examines multiple aspects of attention and executive functioning, which may include sustained attention, impulse control, working memory, processing efficiency, organization, cognitive flexibility, and self-regulation.

The goal is not simply to determine whether a child meets criteria for ADHD. Rather, the evaluation is designed to develop a clear understanding of the child’s individual pattern of strengths and weaknesses and to distinguish ADHD from other conditions that may affect attention, learning, behavior, or emotional functioning. When appropriate, the evaluation may also identify co-occurring learning disabilities, anxiety, mood concerns, or other developmental factors.

Following the evaluation, families receive individualized recommendations based on their child’s specific needs. Recommendations may include educational supports and accommodations, intervention strategies, executive functioning supports, and referrals to other professionals when indicated.
