When should my child be referred?
If you have a school-age child who is struggling in school and losing confidence, an evaluation may be appropriate to determine their strengths and weaknesses and identify any underlying learning or emotional difficulties.
If your child is preschool-age or younger and having difficulty meeting developmental milestones you may want to have your child evaluated to determine a proper course of treatment. There is a range of what is considered to be “normal” or “typical” for the development of skills and here are some examples:

- Responding to his/her name by 12 months old
- Pointing at objects to show interest by 14 months old
- Simple pretend play by 18 months old
- Using and understanding at least ten words by 18 months old
- Knowing what to do with utensils, combs, and brushes, etc., by 24 months old
- Walking unassisted by 16 months old
What can I expect from the evaluation?
The evaluation will assess your child’s functioning in several areas. Some of the areas assessed include:
- Cognitive/intellectual functioning
- Language development
- Academic or pre-readiness skills
- Social-emotional/behavioral functioning
- Adaptive skills (e.g. dressing, feeding)
- Fine and gross motor development
- Memory skills
- Executive functioning
How will a psychological or developmental evaluation help my child and me?
- The evaluation will provide a comprehensive view of the child’s overall functioning including his or her strengths and weaknesses
- Treatment planning will include appropriate referrals (e.g., to speech and language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, etc.,), as well as recommendations for school placement
- Parents will be offered a list of supports in their community to further promote the education and well-being of their child
