The Psychological Evaluation Process
Step 1 – Parent interview and review of records
Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that pertains to your child’s development, medical history, and any school-related information (if applicable). You will be asked to bring the questionnaire (already filled out) to your first appointment where the information will be reviewed and expanded upon. Based on the information you provide, it will be determined whether an assessment is necessary.
Step 2- Assessment
The assessment includes testing of cognitive, language, academic, and fine-motor/visual-motor skills. Neuropsychological testing is also utilized as needed to further evaluate memory, attention, executive functions, and other areas of development. Children usually enjoy this part of the assessment and perceive the activities as games. Parents may be present during the assessment depending the age of the child. As part of the evaluation, school personnel may be contacted for additional information (with permission).
Typical activities during the assessment:
- Drawing
- Looking at books
- Talking
- Writing
- Free play time
- Playing with puzzles and blocks
- Rewards, such as stickers
- Answering questions (verbally and nonverbally)
Step 3- Feedback session
After the evaluation, a follow-up session will be scheduled to discuss the results. Recommendations and diagnoses (if applicable) will be explained, as well as, the best course of treatment. Appropriate referrals will be made and a written report will be issued to you in a timely manner.
